Course description
This course is for nurses who are completing or have completed a Nursing Council approved recertification programme for registered nurse prescribing in community health. This three-day blended course offers the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop skills in sexual health and prescribing contraception.

The course includes contraception and sexual health theory and assessment.This course is considered an equivalent to the 4-day Family Planning Certificate in Contraception and Sexual Health course and will be accepted by Nursing Council for those that would like to supply contraception under the community nurse prescribing.

The course covers:- Fertility awareness
- Hormonal oral contraception: Clinical assessment and safe decision making
- Contraceptive pill teaching
- Depo Provera
- Contraceptive implants
- Emergency contraception
- Intrauterine contraception
- Legal and ethical responsibilities
- Awareness of sexually transmissible infections with a particular focus on those that can be treated using the RN prescribing list of medications
- Sexual history taking
Fee paying only. However, Te Whatu Ora funding is available for the Family Planning Certificate in Contraception and Sexual Health course. -
Prerequisites
- Full New Zealand Nursing Registration.
- Current Practicing Certificate
- Current Indemnity Insurance
- Completed/completing a Nursing Council approved recertification programme for registered nurse prescribing in community health
The approved programmes are:
- Auckland Metro Region
- MidCentral
- Hawkes Bay
- South Island Alliance
- Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley District with the Wairarapa District.

You must complete our Contraception Overview and Practical Essentials 2023 & STI 2023 pre-requisite courses prior to the commencement of the course. Please do not attempt to register for these pre-requisite courses yourself, as each learner will be manually enrolled into them by our Administrator. Note that the pre-requisite courses will take approximately nine hours to complete and must be completed prior to the commencement of the face-to-face workshop.
