Don't DIY your IUD

Saturday, September 25, 2021

Media Release

Family Planning is cautioning against copying a Tik Tok video which purports to show someone removing their own IUD.

IUD’s are great contraception, but our experts says putting them in and taking them out is best left to them. And here’s some of the reasons why.

  1. It can hurt.
  2. It can get stuck.
  3. It can break off.

And, like most things in life, timing is everything. If you’ve had penis in vagina sex in the week before you take your IUD out, you could find yourself pregnant (yup, those swimmers could still be swimming!).

This is a Tik Tok trend that no-one should be sharing. Our message for World Contraception Day (26 September) - get your contraception from a clinician – get your dance tips from an influencer.

Family Planning has clinics located throughout New Zealand. Use the clinic finder to find your nearest clinic.
