Men's Health Week - consultations on the rise

Wednesday, June 13, 2018

National News

It’s Men’s Health Week (11-17 June) and we want all the men out there to know that our services aren’t just for the girls.

The main reason that men come to see us is for STI testing – last year 75.2% of male consults had an STI check as at least a part of the consult.

On top of that, we introduced the option to self-test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea in 2017, to make STI tests as client-friendly as possible. It has proved to be very popular with our male clients. If you don’t have any symptoms, talk to the medical receptionist about doing your own test – it’s quick, easy, and private. We’ll follow up with you if you need an appointment or any further treatment.

We also offer HPV vaccines in some clinics, condoms on prescription, fertility treatments, and can refer you for other health needs such as hormone therapy, fertility care, and sexual dysfunction.

Some services, such as getting a prescription for condoms, can be done over the phone. This means you don’t have to come to a clinic – you can get your prescription faxed to a pharmacy of your choice to pick up.

And, more men than ever are coming to our clinics – there’s been a 33% rise in the number of male consultations over the past four years.

As you’d expect, most of our male consults (40%) were by young men under 22. The good news for these young men is that a visit to one of our clinics is free.

To make an appointment, or to check what services we offer at your local clinic, use our Ask for an Appointment button on our homepage or find a clinic near you.

Family Planning has clinics located throughout New Zealand. Use the clinic finder to find your nearest clinic.
