Dear Family Planning Client

The way we offer services in Ashburton is changing and from the end of June our clinic will be closed. Our funding has not kept pace with the cost of running services like Ashburton which is an outreach from our Christchurch Clinic and comes with additional costs. We’ve tried hard to make this clinic work but with no funding increase for some years, we can no longer continue to provide the service.

So, while the clinic will close on 24 June, we will still be able to offer you some services over the phone:

  • Repeat contraceptive pill prescriptions (some conditions apply)
  • Condom prescriptions
  • Emergency contraception prescriptions
  • Advice about contraceptive options

This phone consultation service is free to New Zealand Residents under 22. It costs $5 for Community Services Card holders and $32 for others. It’s really easy to make a phone consultation – just follow our information below.

Cervical Screening (Smear)

If your last cervical smear was done with Family Planning, you will receive a reminder from us when your next smear is due. You will need to visit your local doctor, practice nurse or health centre for this. Another option is to come to either our Timaru or Christchurch clinics for this service. You can phone Family Planning on 0800 372 546 to check when your smear is due and we can make an appointment for you at Timaru or Christchurch if you wish.

Depo Provera (Depo or the Jab)

If your next injection is due before 7 July please contact us on 0800 372 546 and we can do  this for you before our clinic closes on 24 June. After this you will need to visit your local doctor, practice nurse or health centre for your next injuection.  Again, you can come to either Timaru or Christchurch for your depo injections.

A reminder that for depo to be effective, the injection needs to be given every 10 to 14  weeks.

Will Family Planning forward my records to my doctor to health provider?

We will transfer your records to your doctor only if you ask us to and provide us with the details of who you will be seeing for cervical screening or contraception needs in the future.  We will provide you with a request form which you need to complete and return along with photo identification.

You can call us on 0800 372 546 if you need any additional information about the clinic closure and service changes. If email is easier for you, contact Jackie.Walker@familyplanning.org.nz

Thank you again for your support of our clinic – we are sorry that funding has forced us to make this decision.

Ngā mihi and kind regards
