Bacterial vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis is a vaginal condition. This page outlines the symptoms and the treatment.

WHAT IS IT?

Bacterial vaginosis can result from an imbalance of normal bacteria in a healthy vagina. This means the pH level (acid/alkaline balance) is upset.

Bacterial vaginosis is not an STI.

HOW DO YOU GET IT?

Bacterial vaginosis can be brought on by anything that changes the balance of bacteria in the vagina, such as new sex partners or increased sexual activity. However it can occur in women who have never had sexual intercourse.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

The symptoms are:

  • greyish white smelly vaginal discharge
  • smell often worse after intercourse and around period time.

HOW IS IT TREATED?

Bacterial vaginosis is treated by taking tablets orally. You shouldn't drink alcohol while taking these tablets.

HOW WILL IT IMPACT MY PARTNER/S?

Partners do not need treatment.
