What happens at a Family Planning Clinic?
Family Planning Clinics are very friendly and welcoming. Our staff are trained to be professional and won't judge you. They will make you feel relaxed and comfortable when you visit a clinic.
Calling for an appointment
When you call for an appointment at a Family Planning Clinic the medical receptionist will ask why you are making an appointment. This is so they can determine whether Family Planning can provide the right service for you. Family Planning Clinics provide a range of services.

The medical receptionist will also tell you whether you need to see a doctor or a nurse and how long your appointment will need to be.
When you arrive at the clinic
When you arrive at the Family Planning Clinic, you will be greeted by a medical receptionist. They will ask for your name and may check that your details are still correct and up to date. Once your details are confirmed you can take a seat in our waiting area until the doctor or nurse is ready to see you.
Our medical receptionists are well trained in the area of sexual and reproductive health and respect your right to access our confidential service. We have free information pamphlets in our reception area, which you are more than welcome to take home.
Your appointment
Our registered doctors and nurses are specialists in sexual and reproductive health and are able to talk to you about any sex related topics. The doctor or nurse will ask you about your health history as this may affect the advice they give you. For example, if you are a smoker, they may suggest a different type of contraception for you than if you are a non-smoker.
They will ask about your sexual behaviour. All sex is normal but some kinds of sex are riskier than others. They can help you understand the risks so you can make your own decisions. The doctor or nurse will also do a general health check and have a chat about how things are going with you.
Your appointment is confidential. We think it's great if you can talk to your parents/caregiver about sex, however we don't share any of your information with anyone unless you want us to.
