It's about Mana

Family Planning’s new "It's about Mana" programme draws upon elements of the "My strength is not for hurting" campaign, an anti-rape campaign focussing on young men, which originated in the United States. We have also drawn on Moira Carmody's work on the "ethical bystander".
We wanted a programme that would complement the "It's not ok" campaign. We also wanted something that was distinctly New Zealand, and that came from a strengths perspective, prompting young men to make positive choices about how to behave in relationships.
We talked about key concepts underlying the programme – behaving with dignity, respect, being strong and using strength positively and for good, encouraging and challenging others, being admirable. Using 'Mana' was suggested by our Māori health promoters. We think it encapsulates the purpose of the programme and is core to the behaviours and critical thinking we want to grow in young men.
