Kiribati — Healthy Families: International Programmes
-
The Healthy Families Project in Kiribati is one of our active projects. Healthy Families is implemented in partnership with the Kiribati Family Health Association.
-
It is funded by Aotearoa's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Kiribati has one of the highest needs for sexual and reproductive health services in the Pacific. The population of Kiribati is predicted to double by 2050 — putting significant pressures on limited resources.
Healthy Families aims to reduce sexually transmissible infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies on certain islands of Kiribati. These islands are home to around 72% of the total Kiribati population:- South Tarawa
- Abaiang
- Abemama
- Aranuka
- Butaritari
- Marakei
- North Tarawa
Better access to sexual and reproductive health information, skills, and services on those islands is central to realising Healthy Families’ goals.
We are working alongside Kiribati Family Health Association to support Healthy Families’ goals by:- Training clinicians and nurses — improving the quality of sexual and reproductive services delivered
- Training health promotion staff — improving awareness of sexual and reproductive health and services
- Delivering mobile and after-hours sexual health clinics — increasing reach of, and access to, sexual health services
Distributing condoms - Working with youth volunteers and church groups — raising awareness about sexual and reproductive health and rights
Alongside immediate actions, we also support research and advocacy that will provide Kiribati leaders, and community groups with the information and support they need to continue improving sexual and reproductive health access, and outcomes in their areas.
