Condom Failure
Te takanga o te pukoro ure
If the condom broke or slipped off during sexual intercourse you may need to take the following steps:
- If your main concern is pregnancy go to a Family Planning Clinic, doctor, Accident and Medical centre, sexual health clinic or a pharmacy for Emergency contraception. This needs to be started within 72 hours (three days), but the sooner the better.
- Unless both partners have had clear sexual health check ups there is a chance that you may have caught a Sexually Transmissible Infection (STI), so it is important that you get checked for this. You will need to wait for 2-3 weeks before doing the test or the STI may not show up. Call your nearest Family Planning Clinic or sexual health clinic.
Condoms can be up to 98% effective in preventing pregnancy and helping stop STIs from being passed on - but only if they are used correctly.
