In 1951, Family Planning's first national conference was held in Lower Hutt, and the first clinic opened the following year.
In 1954, the Report of the Special Committee on Moral Delinquency in Children and Adolescents led to it being made illegal to provide or discuss contraception with people aged under 16.
In 1957, Auckland Family Planning clinics began routine cervical smears - a radical practice at the time. Several women with early stage cervical cancer were detected.
